Zen-Listen Your Way to a Better Business

zenlistenProfessionals listen, amateurs talk … everything else is a high priced college education!

For any business owner, or anyone who sells anything for a living, the ability to listen is more important than their ability to promote their product or service. You may not know as much as your client about their business, but you better come pretty close or success will elude you time and time again.

But why make a big deal about this?

This certainly isn’t news, everyone knows that if you listen with an open mind and in a non-judgemental fashion you will achieve the following:

  • Clear instructions on what your client wants vs. what she might need.
  • Information about their business and industry.
  • You get ideas, insights on competitors, past failures and successes, their dreams and their improbabilities.
  • Find your place in their model.

It can’t be about gimmicks, war of words, logic, pretty talk or ego. Here’s the not so secret!

If you can truly help someone by making them look prettier, nursing them back to health, teaching them, helping them sell better, increasing their sales, making their business more efficient … whatever it is that you do … Then there’s very little selling to do!

Just say it! … Simply tell them what it is you can do for them!

Don’t exaggerate, don’t sell, if you can’t help them walk away and approach someone you can help! That’s why listening is so key, because it lets you find your place in the puzzle that is their business!

The rest is about awareness and budget. You may make them aware by educating, but you don’t control their budget.

Remember you are in whatever business you are in, except in the “convincing business”. If your prospect is not convinced that he needs your service or product then you have two choices:

  1. Embark on a convincing campaign, and spend time and energy on making them understand why they need you or...
  2. Walk away and find someone who’s already aware of how your services can make a difference in their business.

People appreciate clarity and insight, offer that and guarantee yourself the gig and their trust!
