Something To Think About!

Google Loves Bloggers

google likes bloggersSince early last year Google has updated its algorithm at least 3 times, Caffeine which focused mostly on infrascture -indexing, crawling and returning results faster. Panda on quality of well optimized content, and this month’s freshness update now brings the newest more relevant content to Google’s SERP (search engine rankings page)

But What Can a Blog Really Do for Your Business?

In addition to informing and engaging the reader on a particular topic, a blog keeps the site away from being a static hub of old content that doesn’t give Google ( or me! ) a reason to visit more often. And since content drives search and the web is becoming more and more social and semantic in nature… What do you think a well positioned blog will do strategically for a brand, big or small?

A well thought out blog post that speaks to humans on a topic that trends and that’s decently optimized for search and content, will rank almost instantly.

In addition Google also likes sites that:

  • Have updated RSS feeds and XML sitemaps
  • Have a presence on Social Media sites and engage rather than just broadcast
  • Are +1’d on Google +
  • Are niched on a particular field or industry
  • And of course are updated frequent with relevant content

The more content you share, produce and curate and the more you do this regularly, the more Google takes a liking to you, the more authority you receive, the more visitors will flock to your hub. Then it all becomes a recurring cascade of value exchange.

This value is what compells people to like, share, download and subscribe to your blog ... and eventually pay you money for your services.

But you soon realize that Google is not the end all, there are a lot of people ranking top 3 for their keyword phrase that are broke!

Google is a social object, a broker between brands and people. It provides primarily a channel for information access but it also dishes out (by the ton!) social proof in the process.

So keeping things fresh and relevant is the game right now!

Here are some tips to keep things fresh:

  • Tie your blog posts when warranted to trending news and events.
  • Release Media alerts about your company new services products or media events via Press Release sites. Create specific pages for this, keep them brief, informative and in English please! (Also don’t do this often, only when strategically sound. The line between a Press Release and Spamming is very thin in my book)
  • Date (… and author) all blog posts.
  • Implement a content marketing strategy.

When you combine the recent changes Google has implemented, Caffeine, Panda and the Fresheness update you realize that both businesses and personal brands should focus their waking hours on creating relevant and compelling content (the kind you bookmark and subscribe to).

Keep in mind that at day’s end Google doesn’t shake your hand … So write for your parents, your sister, your brother, customers and friends, write for strangers … write for me!
