What does Content Marketing and Michael Jordan have in common?

 

michaeljordanIt was said that Michael Jordan threw hundreds of jump shots and ran grueling 3 man drills at practice to the point of exhaustion. Day in and day out he would do this, the man hated to lose and he made sure he was better prepared than anyone else for game day.

Writing about your craft everyday even if you don't publish it (you will eventually), helps both you, and your customer.

It Helps you by organizing your thoughts in order to design a better marketing strategy.

It Helps your customer by better understanding your value and how your craft fits into his/her business model.

What fundamental marketing drills are you running in your organization day in and day out?

Here are some suggestions:

  • Continuously segment your audience. -This allows you to be more specific when you write for them.
  • Figure out who your ideal client is. -Same idea here!
  • Call one of your customers daily and get a referral. 
  • Call one of your customers daily and ask if they are happy with your service. Ask them to tell you something they dislike about doing business with you.
  • Review trigger phrases your customers use to describe your product.
  • Do keyword research and start designing campaigns around these trigger phrases.
  • Review one new piece of technology that could help you do your job better. -Do the same for your clients. 
  • What new customer service strategy have you implemented lately?
  • Continue to refine the most effective way to describe what you do for people. -Get it down on paper!
  • Once a month pick an industry you are unfamiliar with and figure out how you would service it. -This forces you to learn its keywords and phrases.
  • Take 30 minutes every day and think about how to create value for your customers.
  • Take 30 minutes a day to learn about content marketing. Here is a link with the best content marketers in the world.

 

All these points revolve around content and its positioning. Creating specific content for your unique audience is as much a science as it is art, but in both approaches it requires discipline!
